LION MONUMENTAL

Avec Lion Monumental, Patrick Villas inaugure une nouvelle ère dans son parcours artistique. Fruit de trois à quatre années de recherches formelles et plastiques, cette œuvre marque une transition majeure : l’artiste, jusqu’alors ancré dans une figuration expressive s’oriente ici vers une abstraction géométrique, sans pour autant renier la force vitale de ses félins.

Le lion, figure emblématique de son œuvre, est revisité dans une version à la fois majestueuse et fragmentée. L’animal n’apparaît plus dans son intégralité : son corps semble émerger de l’espace, traversé de lignes métalliques, de volumes ajourés et de vides structurants. Cette construction ouverte révèle la charpente interne du fauve, comme une ossature poétique où la puissance se mêle à la légèreté. Entre apparition et disparition, équilibre et tension, le lion devient symbole de transformation, à la fois mémoire du figuratif et élan vers l’abstraction.

Par cette œuvre, Villas poursuit une réflexion sur la forme, la matière et le mouvement, explorant un langage sculptural nouveau. Cette recherche trouve également écho dans d’autres pièces récentes telles que Léopard en marche (2024), Tête de panthère – Linea contemporanea (2024), Portrait de femme (2025) ou encore Panthère sur la branche – Contemporanea (2025). MONUMENTAL LION

With Lion Monumental, Patrick Villas ushers in a new era in his artistic career. The result of three to four years of formal and plastic research, this work marks a major transition: the artist, who until now had been rooted in expressive figuration, is now moving towards geometric abstraction, without however denying the vital force of his felines.

The lion, an emblematic figure in his work, is revisited in a version that is both majestic and fragmented. The animal no longer appears in its entirety: its body seems to emerge from space, traversed by metallic lines, openwork volumes, and structuring voids. This open construction reveals the internal framework of the beast, like a poetic skeleton where power mingles with lightness. Between appearance and disappearance, balance and tension, the lion becomes a symbol of transformation, both a memory of the figurative and a leap towards abstraction.

With this work, Villas continues his exploration of form, material, and movement, exploring a new sculptural language. This research is also echoed in other recent pieces such as Leopard Walking (2024), Panther Head – Linea contemporanea (2024), Portrait of a Woman (2025), and Panther on a Branch – Contemporanea (2025). Together, these works bear witness to a period of innovation in which the artist profoundly renewed his relationship with volume, emptiness, and line.

Lion Monumental thus stands out as a synthesis between instinct and construction, between nature and abstraction. Patrick Villas asserts a refined, architectural sculpture in which the strength of the beast persists, transfigured by the rigor of the design and the freedom of the form.
